Fall is always a great season in D.C., and the festivals have already started.
Chinese Cultural Festival
The 24th annual Chinese Cultural Festival was held on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Smithsonian Circus Arts
As an extension of the Folklife Festival, the Smithsonian had a circus festival last weekend inside the Arts and Industries Building, featuring performers from the Circus Arts Conservatory and the youth of the Sailor Circus Academy.

D.C. State Fair
D.C.’s state fair, held at Anthem Row and around the Carnegie Library, had lots of activities and demonstrations.
We were especially impressed by the demonstrations of hand dancing. Hand dancing is the official dance of D.C., having started in D.C. in the 1950’s as D.C.’s unique version of jitterbug and swing-style dancing.

Cooking demonstrations included instructions on how to make tortillas.

On a sadder note:
The flags were at half-staff honoring Dolly Parton:

A beloved old tree by the Dupont Circle fountain broke in the last storm:

People covered the broken tree with thank-you notes for having graced the circle for a long time.
