An uncertain week

It’s been a pretty typical week in D.C. – some great things and some terrible things. Here’s what we saw:

Blossoms

The unusually long cold stretch has delayed the opening of most blooms, so there isn’t as much to see this time of year as usual.

Crazy weather

Two days ago, it reached summer temperatures:

And yesterday it was snowing – the temperature had swung from 86 to 33 degrees in 24 hours, one of the craziest weather swings ever.

Snow piles remain

These photos were taken a couple of days ago – 43 days after the snowstorm. There’s a snowpile remaining on one side of the Capitol Reflecting Pool that is still several feet high and almost black with grime.

Birds

We haven’t seen any baby birds yet this season, but there are some wonderful cormorants at Constitution Gardens.

National Zoo

This in-between season is a great time to see the animals outdoors at the zoo.

Cancer awareness

The blue flags are on the Mall to raise awareness of colorectal cancer and the need for more research funding.

Trump/Epstein statue

Back in September there was a Trump/Epstein statue on the Mall for a few days, and now another one has appeared (by the anonymous group “The Secret Handshake”). This one has Trump and Epstein in the classic Jack and Rose pose from Titanic, with the Capitol visible between their legs. The artists got a permit for the statue (using a go-between to stay anonymous) but the end date of the permit is not public.
