It’s been a long hard week for many city residents, as the political climate becomes more and more divisive and fears increase.
ICE protests
In response to the actions of ICE in Minneapolis and the killing of Renee Nicole Good, there were many protests around the city this week. We went to three of them:
Saturday at the White House
Despite pouring rain, a large crowd protested near the White House.

Sunday rally and march
A large crowd rallied at 3rd and Pennsylvania, followed by a 1 1/4 mile march to ICE headquarters. At the rally, speakers counseled the large crowd in how to stay safe and de-escalate situations. The police closed off streets to enable the march.

Tuesday
A large crowd rallied outside the U.S. Customs and Border Protection headquarters on Tuesday night.

Senators Chris Van Hollen, Alex Padilla, and Chris Murphy spoke to the crowd, vowing to keep on fighting against the abuses of ICE.

Supreme Court
The first major case of 2026 was heard on Tuesday – combining two cases that challenge state bans against transgender athletes. Advocates for both sides of the issue were outside the court during the hearing, with a large crowd spilling onto First Street. The decision won’t be announced until later this spring.

Seeking respite
If you need a break from the news, we saw wonderful animals this week in Rock Creek Park and on the Mall, and also at the Zoo.
