It’s been a week with a lot of emotion around the city, as veterans are celebrated, government workers suffer during the shutdown, and many worry about food and the cost and availability of vital services.
Honor Flights
Honor flights are run by non-profits in various states. They offer free trips for veterans of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam – brought to D.C. for a day to visit the monuments that honor them. Two of our editors are volunteer photographers for the flights from Indiana.

World Central Kitchen
On a cold Veteran’s Day, World Central Kitchen set up at the Navy Memorial to feed furloughed Federal workers and their families.

This photo shows less than half of the boxes of food that World Central Kitchen brought to this event – the scope of what they do around the world and in this city is so amazing.

The government reopens
On Wednesday afternoon shortly before the House vote to reopen the government, the Democrats led by Hakeem Jeffries came out for a press conference on the Capitol steps.

The White House Ballroom
We continue to be sad about the destruction of the East Wing of the White House. Views of the new construction are blocked off at ground level, but here’s a view from above – in the lower right corner, you can see a construction worker at the hole of the former East Wing.

In memoriam
It’s a frequent sight on the Mall – flags or other symbols that represent the numbers of deaths or other tragedies. Last weekend’s flags were for those who have died of lung cancer.

Vets Say No
On Veteran’s Day, there was a rally at Union Station.
Together we say NO this Veterans Day – no to ICE, no to occupation, no to fascism, and no to cuts stripping away life saving services our communities need.

Rally at the Lincoln Memorial
Last Saturday there was a rally at the Lincoln Memorial – a familiar sight there, and always something to think and learn more about, as many times the rallies are about countries and issues that don’t get much notice in America.

Border patrol
The Border Patrol has trucks driving around the city with recruiting messages.

And now for some happier things:
Holiday market
The popular F Street holiday market is already under construction. It opens on November 21st.

The natural world
It’s a great season to be outdoors, before it gets too cold – and the skies are wonderful.

But unfortunately, spotted lantern flies are everywhere.
