Arlington National Cemetery

For the Memorial Day weekend, soldiers from the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (“The Old Guard”) place flags by each of the 260,000 headstones in the cemetery. Each flag is carefully set exactly one boot-length from the headstone, in a solemn process that takes 1,500 soldiers over four hours, starting before dawn. The Old Guard has placed these flags every year since 1948.
