Breaking (or breakdancing) is the newest event added to the Olympics this year. There are so many great breakdancers in D.C. that maybe we are looking at some future Olympians? Here are some we’ve seen in D.C.:

Cultural support for breakdancing
The local non-profit Words Beats & Life supports youth through education in the hip hop culture. The Kennedy Center established a Hip Hop Culture Council in 2018. Together, the two organizations have sponsored festivals which feature breakdancing competitions at the Kennedy Center.

The State Department uses hip hop artists as part of their cultural ambassador programs visiting other countries. Here’s a demonstration of breakdancing that the State Department gave before a cultural contingent left on their international tour.

You may also see another Olympic sport demonstrated around D.C. over the next couple of days – USA Fencing is sponsoring Fencing Across America.
