The Albino Squirrels

Fall is a great time to watch squirrels, as they run around gathering food for winter. We’re especially fond of the albino squirrels that hang around the Mall.

Are albino and white squirrels the same?

No. White squirrels are a color variation of the common gray squirrel, with white fur (sometimes with a gray patch on their head) and normally-dark squirrel eyes. Albino squirrels are pure white with the characteristic pale eyes of albinos.

Do albino squirrels get along with other squirrels?

Of course they do – they happily play with gray squirrels.

Keeping clean

It’s definitely tough to keep white fur completely clean.

In motion

Like other squirrels, albino squirrels run and jump fast, and are always alert.

How many albino squirrels are there?

We’ve heard that there are four squirrels in the group we’ve been watching on the Mall, but we’ve only seen three at once:

Where can you see them?

The albino squirrels have been spotted all over the Mall for the last few years. But you can also spot some around the city. The popular blog Popville started “Friends of the Great White Whale” five years ago, and since then people have frequently sent them sightings from many places in D.C.

  1. I love these adorable cotton ball fluffy squirrels. There was one I used to photograph quite frequently that lived on Constitution a few blocks further down from the national gallery of art.

    1. They are a wonderful part of the Mall, aren’t they? The old trees there are great for squirrels.
